The Fleet Commander previously commissioned the research and development of his first personal fighter to be based on the advanced TIE Defender fighter design. The primary advances included an upgraded powerplant, shields, and sensor suite. Two additional lasers were added to the popular quad pattern fire linkage. However, the full fire linking has to be used sparingly due to its expected energy drain. This has resulted in the relocation of the two ion cannons underneath the pilot pod chassis. With the introduction of the newly designed Sienar Fleet Systems SFS L-S7c solar ionisation reactor, the speed of the fighter far exceeds that of the Cygnus Missile Boat at full SLAM (>200 MGLT)!

With the introduction of the TIE Protector, the Fleet Commander has allowed limited assignment of the TIE Guardian for use as personal fighters by other Command Officers and Command Attaches. In addition, Omega Squadron and the Special Operations Wing (Wing VII) on board the SSSD Sovereign are expected to obtain some of the new TIE Guardians. However, due to the cost of manufacture and maintenance, these fighters can only be produced in limited numbers.
